Proper pool water circulation is the key to a crystal-clear swimming pool the whole year round. Shop pool pump sizes from 0.75HP to 2.0HP, and even variable speed pumps from trusted brands such as Water TechniX, Davey, Onga, and More.
The primary purpose of a pool pump is to circulate pool water through a filter (typically a sand filter or cartridge filter). The pool pump draws water from the pool skimmer and pushes it through the filter and other ancillary equipment, such as salt water chlorinators, heaters, or heat pumps. Water is then returned to the pool via jets on the walls or floor of the pool, circulating the water.
Pool pumps are also responsible for the power of a suction pool cleaner as the cleaner is connected via the skimmer box through a vacuum plate and water drawn through the cleaner from the pump.
Undersized pool pumps can cause a lot of issues which include, but are not limited to: your pool cleaners not having enough pressure to work, higher electricity costs, and improper pool water circulation. So be sure to get a pump the is correctly sized for your pool.
Pool pump efficiency has a number of contributing variables, including the configuration of the equipment installed, as they can drastically affect the energy consumption of the pool pump. These include:
Filter type and size
The distance of equipment from pool
Size and number of pool plumbing and fittings
Presence of other equipment such as pool heater, chlorinator or suction cleaning device
Size of the pool or spa
Operation time required to turn the water (time it takes to filter all of the water in the pool)
Pool pumps consist of a motor at the rear, driving an impeller within the ‘wet end’ of the front of the pump, drawing water into the chamber where any debris is collected by the pump baskets before the water is pumped out to the filter.
Types of Pool Pumps
Single Speed Pumps
These pumps are the standard pump style, with an on and off switch and one flow rate.
Dual Speed
These pumps have a low or high setting with minimal energy efficiency and few applications.
Multiple Speed
These pumps usually have 3 to 4 fixed speeds with medium energy efficiency with more applications.
Variable Speed
These pumps are the most energy efficient, with fully customisable speeds to allow best energy efficiency in any application.
